but tonight I was totally freaked out by something I heard. First let me just say that I do NOT believe that a human spirit comes back to "visit" on earth. So do I believe in ghosts? Nah...evil spirits? Uh Huh. But that's a story for another day.
I was sitting on Greg's couch tonight talking to him about what Thomas wanted for Christmas. The TV was tuned to an old Clint Eastwood movie but the volume wasn't that loud. Thomas was upstairs watching another TV.
From the corner of the livingroom I heard, "mommy" except it was drawn out like someone was calling their mother. I heard it three times. I thought it was Thomas calling from upstairs but he doesn't call me "mommy". Just as I had the thought that maybe he was hurt, Greg asked me where Thomas was. He heard it too. It was loud and clear.
There was nothing in this corner but a rocking chair and a window. No vent that sound could have traveled. I called Thomas down and asked him if he called. Nope. I asked him if he had the TV up loud. Nope.
Freaky, definately. But it gets more interesting. Greg started telling me about a shadow he saw at the top of the stairs one night. He said that on three different occaisions the phone has rung once, in the middle of the night, with no one there when he picks up and no phone number on the caller ID. He said he hears rumblings...and other strange sounds that are odd.
I'm not ready to believe that there's something evil going on in his house. I'd have to see something fly off a shelf and crash to the floor or something similar to convince me of that. But he definately had my attention.
His father thought that the rumbling sound could be the furnace turning on. Keep in mind he's only been in this house since October and he's not used to city sounds. There is a train going by at least three times in the middle of the night. You can see the train from his window, it's that close. The rumbling might be from the train.
I wanted to see if the caller ID worked with one ring so I called him on my cell. If I hung up quick enough, no phone number appeared. That explained that. Some bozo is probably calling another number and kept misdialing, hanging up when they realize what they've done.
The shadow he saw at the top of the stairs could have come from the window that's up near the ceiling, over the front door. If you're standing at the top of the stairs looking down, it's directly in front of you above the front door. If a car went by or maybe the train, a light could cast a shadow at the top of the stairs.
That leaves the voice. It could have come from outside. There is a window in that corner. But it was almost 9:30pm and if someone was out there, they were in the pitch black side yard, where they had no business being.
I guess I'll just chalk it up to one of those freaky "wtf" moments and leave it at that. I sort of got a kick out of seeing Gregs feathers ruffled. I think he's secretly worried about it. *snicker*
