As Thomas and I approached our car after a bit of shopping, I noticed a few coins on the ground by my door. As we leaned over to pick them up, I spotted a large pile just under the car. I got down on my knees and started pulling them out.
Thomas' eyes got wide and he proclaimed "We hit the jackpot!" I don't think he realized at the time that these weren't american coins. So there we were, on our hands and knees, picking up 106 strange looking coins. He kept saying how cool it was and I kept asking him to hurry up so we could get off the ground! People were starting to notice.
When we got home we counted and separated them. We have British pounds, Euros, Canadian and French coins. There was one that I couldn't identify. It was made from two metals seen in this picture above at about 12 o'clock. After some research online, we found it was from Morocco. Here's the picture I found online.
Ours is not as nice. It's a bit worn. Thomas wants to keep the coins but I told him we had to try to find the owner first. It seemed odd that someone would drop these from their car and not hear them fall. They weren't scattered about, they were in a small pile. So, I thought maybe they were stolen and disposed of in the parking lot by someone who realized they weren't good for spending.
After contacting the county and local police departments and the store where we were parked, I told Thomas that he can have them after 2 weeks if no one claimed them. He's very excited about that. It's not very often that a 10 year old "hits the jackpot!"
